Don's career path to where he is now is not an unusual one. His love of transportation came at an early age when he found that there was a fascination with cars trains and airplanes. Especially dear was his love of flying machines. Starting with the usual hanging around the corner gas station/repair garage he was able to begin by sweeping floors, cleaning up and sometimes if lucky able to perform an oil change or perhaps help lift something large up into a car on the lift. After High school Don turned his attention to a local community college while working at nights and in-between in the shop. Not being fully satisfied with the small challenges present, he decided to join the United States Air Force. Once there his skills brought to him the position of Crew Chief of his own fighter jet. There many new challenges lay before him in maturing and technical knowledge, ultimately to receive his A&P certification and NCO ranking. Four years of constant on the job training and personnel management would be used all throughout his life. Most satisfying was "Working all night in the dark to get the bird (McDonnell Douglas F-4D) ready for first flight in the morning.""There's nothing like seeing the sight of a fighter jet in full afterburner against a pre dawn sky with the mountains in the background." Don was stationed at Torrejon AB 20km. outside Madrid for 3.5 years. After leaving the Air Force Don returned once again to automobiles he by chance answered an ad to become a service advisor at a prominent North Jersey BMW dealer. One long test drive in an E-28 533 cemented the deal. "I wore that car like a suit." "I have never been so connected to a car!" From that point on there was Blau mit Weiss in his blood. After a short while he found he would rather have a wrench in his hands and not a pen. He successfully walked across the floor and resumed his career as a technician. Having attended many BMW training schools, being certified and becoming an ACT BMW certified technician. Later to graduate becoming shop foreman, then service manager for another BMW dealer. Sensing there was something left empty and un-fulfilled he left the fold and joined an independent BMW specialist. There he got his first REAL taste of BMW's mighty M cars! Servicing, maintaining and making M cars go fast finally got the pulse of Don's heart racing at a pace that started to satisfy him. After having procured his first M car (E-30 M-3) he participated in many years of driving schools as a student, instructor and competitor. Placing 14th on the grid and winning his class with a second overall at Watkins Glen for his first race truly showed him some satisfaction for his competitive nature. Starting, & opening a shop of your own is not for the faint of heart. Ignoring the advice of most he opened Autosport Performance. An aggressive 8 man Bosch Authorized Service Center-BSC. There he and his crew received and benefited by Bosch Factory in depth service and management training. Don prospered there for over a decade, still hearing the call from within every now and then for more. Having met and marrying his lovely wife Barbara in 2001 he re-located to the NJ shore. Commuting north over an hour every day pushed the inevitable once again. Opening his second shop on none other than an airport seemed a natural and superfluous way to go! With an outrageous name of ///MrMCar to boot! Now in its 4th year, the best in life is still left to come. Don and Barb also enjoy time off on weekends going "two up" on their BMW K-1100LT motorcycle. They are always looking forward to attending BMW motorcycle club rallies and events. |
